  • Bullying
    • 43% of primary children experienced bullying
    • 29% of post primary (Dept of Educ. 2008)
    • 1 in 10 children (5-16yrs) has a mental heath disorder (Barnardos)
    • 1 in 15 young people has self harmed – on average 2 in every secondary school classroom (Barnardos)
    • NI has the highest rate of children on the Child Protection register across the UK ( March 06)

Substance Abuse

  • Britain has the highest rate of illegal drug use in the EU and high levels if alcohol consumption and smoking(PHLS)
  • Since 1998 there has been an increase in the use of cocaine among young people. In contrast the use of cannabis, amphetamines and LSD has declined. (British Crime survey 2004.5)


  • Young people made up nearly 20% of all people in custody
  • Almost 75% of young offenders (under 21 years) were re convicted within 2 years (TES, 9 June 2006)


  • 5000 children involved in prostitution (Home Office, 2004)
  • The average age women become involved being just 12 years old)
  • The largest group of viewers of internet porn is children ages 12 and 17 (Family Safe Media, Dec 15, 2005, a US based organisation)
